A Straight Guide to the 7 Day Serengeti Safari Package

Summary: A 7 day serengeti safari package gives you the room a shorter trip doesn’t: time to build a proper northern circuit without living in the vehicle. A sensible route holds the intermediate stops (Tarangire, Manyara, the crater) to a night each and gives you three nights deep in the Serengeti, then flies you back on the last morning instead of eating a day on the return drive. For a private double-occupancy loop from Arusha covering your 4×4, TANAPA permits, and the fly-back seat, realistic high-season rates run between USD 5,500 and USD 24,500 per person sharing.

Seven days is enough to do this properly, and getting the route right matters more than piling on miles. Most booking directories run the same textbook summary and imply any package will line your vehicle up with the river crossings. It won’t, not by itself. Pick your base camps blindly and you can spend hard-won vacation days on washboard roads staring at empty plains, because the herds move constantly with the rain and your camps have to follow. Review the covered features first, then the seasonal routing.

Is a 7-Day Serengeti Safari Right for You

A few quick things to weigh before the prices below:

It’s a great fit if: you want the full northern circuit at a sane pace, you’d like to see Tarangire and the crater properly alongside the Serengeti (not just wave at them), or this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip you don’t want to rush.

Look elsewhere if: you’re on a tight budget and would rather a focused 3 or 4-day trip, or you only care about the Serengeti itself and see the intermediate parks as filler. If so, a shorter package is the better buy.

Complete Day Itinerary

This route drives the circuit and flies you out, which keeps you tracking to the last hour. The Serengeti nights are central Seronera by default; in calving or crossing season we point them at Ndutu or Kogatende instead, per the routing after this.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire Baobabs

I’ll knock on your hotel door in Arusha at 6:30 AM. Leave at 7:00 instead and we sit an hour in commuter traffic, and I would rather have you watching elephants by mid-morning than a bumper in town. We head up the Rift Valley escarpment and reach Tarangire before the day heats up. Big breeding elephant herds dig for water in the dry riverbeds there, and the afternoon is yours among the baobabs before we pull into the ridge lodge for dinner.

Day 2: Lake Manyara’s Groundwater Forest

Today is the mahogany-and-fig forest under the western rift wall, cool and humid where the groundwater springs up. Big baboon troops work the lanes, and this is the park known for its tree-climbing lions, which drape themselves along the low limbs of the acacias through the heat of the day. You’ll watch blue monkeys in the canopy before climbing the switchbacks up to the green farm country around Karatu for the night.

Day 3: The Ngorongoro Crater Floor

You’re up in the dark, mist on the crater rim, and the cruiser drops the steep 2,000-foot track by 6:00 AM to beat the convoys. You track endangered black rhino across the soda flats on the crater floor, then climb the western ascent by noon. You sleep at an eco-camp tucked against the outer highlands.

Day 4: Into the Core Plains

Past the permits at Naabi Hill Gate by mid-afternoon, and the horizon just opens, endless short-grass country in every direction. You trace cheetah families hunting the edges of the sandy gullies, and thousands of zebra call across the plains as the air cools. You check into your central camp before the curfew.

Day 5: A Full Day on the Central Plains

A whole day out on the tracks. You carry packed lunch boxes in the fridge, which keeps you working the quiet midday hours while the group trucks head back for lunch. This is the day the trip is built around, unhurried, out where the migration actually is, working the remote loops near the Nyabogati channels and back to camp under a full sky of stars.

Day 6: The Quiet Western Ridges

The cruiser works the gravel paths out toward the western corridor near the Ikoma boundary, into whistling-thorn country where big resident buffalo herds graze. These outer ridges hold a strong leopard population that hunts from the big sausage trees, and it’s quiet out here, you’ll often have the sighting to yourself. Back to the central river sector by evening.

Day 7: The Bush Runway Fly-Back

A final short loop along the Seronera River at dawn is your best shot at hippos in the mist. Your driver drops you at the Seronera runway around 9:30 AM, the ground crew weighs your soft duffels against the 15 kg cap, and you board a Cessna Caravan back to Arusha before noon, a flight worth the small premium. Grab a left-side seat for the view down into the Ngorongoro caldera on the climb out. That flight spares you the eight-hour return drive.

Most 7-day itineraries park the Serengeti nights in central Seronera and leave them there all year. Seronera is a fine year-round base for resident cats, but if you’re timing this around the migration, the deep-Serengeti nights should follow the herds:

Travel Months

Where the Migration Is

How That Changes Your Routing

Jan to Mar

Southern plains / Ndutu (calving)

Base the plains nights at Ndutu; off-road is legal there in the Conservation Area

Apr to May

Western Corridor / Grumeti (green season)

Lean the Day 6 corridor loop harder; afternoon rain, lower rates

Jun to Jul

Central and moving north

Standard routing holds, with Grumeti crossings late in the window

Aug to Oct

Northern Serengeti / Kogatende (Mara crossings)

Shift the plains nights north to Kogatende for the river crossings

Nov to Dec

Central plains (short rains)

The itinerary above works as written

Timing shifts two or three weeks with the rains, so tell us your dates first. The good mobile camps (Nasikia, the Nomad camp) relocate four or five times a year to stay on the herds, which is how a “central” package still puts you on the calving plains in February.

The Transit-Fee Trap (Dual-Zone Gates)

Here’s a real one worth budgeting for. The main road from Karatu to the Serengeti plains runs straight through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the NCAA is a separate authority from the national park with its own gate and its own fee. You pay an NCAA charge (currently about USD 70.80 per adult) just to transit that road toward the western plains, even if you never descend into the crater. People assume it’s a free public highway; it isn’t.

A self-drive group last season learned this the hard way, budgeted to the last dollar, hit the southern gate, and sat three hours in the sun while their driver scrambled to pull a fresh GePG control number over a patchy data signal. On a booked package this is handled for you and already priced in, but it’s exactly the kind of dual-zone cost the cheap online brokers leave out of a quote to look cheaper. Don’t budget down to the final dollar, and ask any operator directly whether the NCAA transit fee is included.

Paying at the Gate: Cashless and Signal

Tanzania’s gates went cashless. Fees clear through the government GePG system on a control number your operator pre-pays, and the rangers won’t take cash at the window, so a licensed operator sorts this before you arrive. Where it bites the unprepared: the card terminals at remote checkpoints lean on cell signal, and in peak season that network jams, so a card payment at the window can crawl. A group turning up without pre-cleared vouchers can lose half a day in a hot car park.

Two field notes while you’re sitting at the barrier. That loud cracking in the thickets is usually a breeding elephant herd feeding, not something to worry about. And the white dust past the ranger posts is volcanic ash, flour-fine; keep the camera in a dry bag and don’t change a lens with the roof open, or the grit gets into the focus ring.

The Seronera Airstrip and Luggage Limits

Prepare for your bush flight by packing in flexible, soft-sided duffel bags for your serengeti fly in safari package.

Don’t expect a terminal on Day 7. The Seronera runway is a hard-packed dirt strip in the grass, managed by TANAPA, and the “lounge” is an open-sided wooden pavilion. Flights fall under the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, and the operators fly single-engine Cessna Caravans with narrow cargo pods under the floor, so bags have to bend to fit.

A rigid aluminium case with a frame or wheels won’t go in the pod, and the pilot will leave it on the tarmac, so pack everything in soft duffels under the 15 kg (33 lb) cap. Don’t stress the weight on a 7-day trip, though: nearly every camp includes free or cheap next-day laundry, so pack a few outfits and let them wash. Takeoffs also flex with the weather, since thick morning mist can hold the planes on the ground until it lifts.

Critical Savanna Booking FAQ

What happens to our permits if morning mist delays the flight?

The park doesn’t refund or extend permits for weather. If a thick mist settles over the valley, the small planes wait on the tarmac until it lifts, and your guide stays with you at the airstrip pavilion until the aircraft comes.

Is a medical CPAP machine supported at the remote camps?

Yes, but tell us upfront. Most mobile camps run on solar and cut tent power around 10:00 PM to save it, so flag a CPAP or any medical device when you book and the crew rigs an independent deep-cycle battery inside your tent before you arrive.

What is the custom for tipping the tracking crew?

You tip your driver-guide roughly USD 20 to 30 a day from the whole vehicle on the final morning, in a single envelope. For the lodge team, don’t tip individuals; drop about USD 15 a night into the communal staff box on reception at checkout, which is split among the kitchen and laundry crews you never see.

Can you drive off-road for closer predator photos?

No. Off-road driving is illegal inside the TANAPA-managed park, to protect the topsoil, and a driver who cuts across the grass risks fines and suspension. One exception: Ndutu sits in the Conservation Area, not the park, so off-road is legal there, which is part of why calving season is such good photography.

Why do some luxury 7-day packages cost so much more?

You’re paying for space. Budget group tours can stack a dozen trucks around one sighting. The top properties like Singita Sasakwa sit on private concessions with exclusive traversing rights, so your vehicle works the game in near-silence with no convoy, plus off-road and walking access the public park doesn’t allow.
