What the Morning Is Really Like

The start is brutally early: you’re up around 4:30 AM, because the balloons must launch at first light when the air is coldest and stillest. Dress in warm layers, it’s genuinely cold on that pre-dawn transfer, and the burners only warm you from above once you’re flying. Bring a small bag that hangs from your wrist or neck, because anything you drop from the basket is gone, and a fully charged camera with an empty card; you’ll fill it.

The landing is not a gentle touchdown. The pilot picks the best open spot and you come down with a bump, sometimes dragging a little, so everyone crouches into a braced position in the basket for the last moment. It’s part of the fun, not a fault, but it surprises people who expect to float down like a feather. Once you’re down, the ground crew’s first job is walking the landing area, they check the immediate ground before anyone climbs out, since you’ve landed in genuine wilderness.

Who Can and Can’t Fly
