The Honest Field Guide to Serengeti Safari Packages

A pride of lionesses and young cubs resting on a grassy savanna ridge.
A majestic lion pride resting peacefully in the Serengeti wilderness.

Summary: Selecting legitimate serengeti safari packages starts with matching your travel dates to where the Great Migration columns actually are that month. Steering clear of the commercial convoy loops means private vehicle scheduling, multi-zone transit permits, and regional airstrip flights. For a fully managed multi-destination private circuit that covers all vehicle fuel and your return domestic flight, realistic high-season rates run between USD 3,450 and USD 34,900 per person sharing.

Pick your route from a generic online travel gallery and you can land yourself in a real logistical mess. Most retail sites show you the same flawless photo, a single leopard resting on a clean acacia branch, and make the whole thing look effortless, as if any package will drop your vehicle beside the active herds.

Book a generic holiday loop blindly and you can spend the whole trip parked in an empty valley staring at dry dirt, because the migration columns move continuously along shifting seasonal rainfall paths, and your lodging has to sit where they actually are. As one local planner put it, you can travel in peak August and still miss the migration entirely if you are based in the wrong sector.

Get that wrong and the rest of the itinerary barely matters. Review the covered features below to organise your funds before your flight lands, and if you want to secure your private cruiser slots before the high-season crunch, you can send your travel details straight to the Arusha office through the Custom Safari Inquiry Page.

Why the Price Swings So Hard

Master your budget planning with this clear breakdown of Serengeti safari cost drivers.

Cost Driver

Budget Impact & Access Rules

Accommodation

Lodges can be 5x pricier based on staff ratios and exclusivity, not just the room style.

Location Type

Private Concessions: Allow off-road tracking and night drives.

Public Parks: Restricted to designated tracks.

Logistics

Flights cost USD 200–250 per segment. They add up quickly but save 2 full days of brutal driving.

Seasonality

Peak periods (Jul–Oct and Feb calving) demand a 20% to 40% premium over green seasons.

That USD 3,450-to-34,900 range comes down to four things. Knowing them tells you where the money goes:

  • Where you sleep. This is the biggest one. A public-park tented camp and a private-concession lodge can both sit in the Serengeti and be five times apart in price. You’re paying for the staff-to-guest ratio and the exclusivity, not the canvas.
  • Public park vs private concession. The Ultra-Luxury names (Singita, Chem Chem, the Grumeti reserves) sit on private concessions with their own traversing rights, which means off-road driving, night drives, and walking, none of which is legal inside the public park. That access is a big part of the premium.
  • Fly-in vs drive-in. Driving is roughly USD 250 to 275 per vehicle per day. A light-aircraft hop with a carrier like Coastal Aviation runs about USD 200 to 250 a segment, so flying the whole loop adds up fast for a couple, but it buys back two brutal driving days and adds game-drive time.
  • Season. Peak months (Jul-Oct and the Feb calving) carry a 20 to 40 percent premium over the green season for the exact same camp.

Align your travel dates with the migration using this monthly package length guide.

How long you book follows the calendar. It has to. The herds are somewhere different every season, and the month decides which sectors your trip has to reach, which decides the length. Here is the seasonal breakdown:

  • January to March: calving. The herds pack onto the short-grass plains around Ndutu in the southern Serengeti, where roughly 8,000 calves drop a day at the February peak and the predators follow. It’s flat, open, and far less crowded than crossing season. An 8-Day or 12-Day covers Ndutu properly alongside the crater and the central plains.
  • April to June: green season and the Grumeti. The herds drift northwest through the western corridor, with the first Grumeti crossings from about late May. Rates drop, crowds thin, and a 6-Day or 8-Day catches the movement without the peak-season price.
  • July to October: the Mara crossings. This is the famous one, up north at Kogatende on the Mara River. Crossings are unpredictable, so give yourself time near the river: an 8-Day or the 12-Day, which splits your nights between the central valleys and the northern loops, gives you the real odds.
  • November to December: the return south. The herds filter back toward Ndutu as the short rains green the plains, a quiet, photogenic window that a 6-Day handles nicely.

Match the package to the month and the sector, not just the month, and you’re good to go. The northern crossing camps in particular sell out 8 to 12 months ahead, so the earlier you lock a peak-season trip, the better.

Which Tier Is Right for You

Before you scroll the tables, a rough gut-check on the four tiers:

  • Budget Comfort: you’re here for the wildlife, not the thread count, and shared or simple lodge facilities are completely fine.
  • Mid-Range Classic: you want a proper bed, hot showers, and a solid location without paying for a plunge pool you’ll barely use.
  • Luxury Signature: you want standout camps in prime spots, great food, and a bit of polish, but you’re not chasing the very top.
  • Ultra-Luxury: you want a private plunge pool, champagne on arrival, private-concession access, and zero shared tracks. Money is not the deciding factor.

Four-Day Safari Packages

Four days is too short, and a good part of it goes to driving. We run it for people who only have the week, and a rushed Serengeti still beats no Serengeti, but stretch to six or eight days if you possibly can. The route is a fast loop from Arusha through Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater floor, then a single night in the central plains, and you fly back on the final morning so the last day isn’t eaten by the drive.

4-Day Double-Occupancy Safari Packages

Package Tier

Ultra-Luxury

USD 9,450

Little Chem Chem / Entamanu Ngorongoro / Singita Faru Faru Lodge

Note: the Serengeti night is central (Seronera) by default. Jan-Mar we move it to Ndutu so you wake up on the calving plains.

Six-Day Safari Packages

A more balanced regional circuit that adds a single night along the Lake Manyara escarpment. That extra day gives your group more tracking through changing country before you enter the main valley, and it keeps your Serengeti stay capped at exactly two nights.

6-Day Double-Occupancy Safari Packages

Ultra-Luxury

USD 14,950

Chem Chem Lodge / Lake Manyara Tree Lodge / andBeyond Crater Lodge / Sasakwa Lodge

Note: the two Serengeti nights sit central by default; in Nov-Dec, when the herds drop south, we shift them toward Ndutu, exact camp depending on where the grass is that week. One honest heads-up on Budget Comfort: Serengeti Heritage is clean and well-placed, but the canvas gets loud when the wind comes across the plains at night. Pack earplugs and you’ll sleep fine.

Eight-Day Safari Packages

The sweet spot for a complete northern circuit loop, valid for the 2026/2027 travel seasons. This layout holds the smaller intermediate stops to a single night each, which frees up 4 full nights inside the high-density predator sectors.

8-Day Double-Occupancy Safari Packages

Note: Jul-Oct this reroutes to Kogatende for the Mara crossings, which is why the Ultra-Luxury line gains a camp. And Ultra-Luxury here puts you at Namiri Plains, where the cheetah tracking is some of the best in the park, migration or not.

Twelve-Day Safari Packages

The deep-exploration circuit for serious wilderness enthusiasts. To keep the Serengeti stay under the 4-night maximum, this extended route adds a night in Arusha town and two nights among the flamingos and volcanic scenery of Lake Natron.

12-Day Double-Occupancy Safari Packages

USD 16,500

Arusha Coffee Lodge / Nimali Tarangire / Manyara Luxury Camp / Lake Natron Luxury Camp / Oldeani Mountain Lodge / Serengeti Explorer

Ultra-Luxury

USD 34,900

Legendary Lodge / Sanctuary Swala / Chem Chem Lodge / Gibb’s Farm / The Highlands Ngorongoro / Singita Sabora Tented Camp

Note: the good mobile camps up north move four or five times a year chasing the migration, so the exact northern property on a 12-day shifts with your travel dates. We confirm the current camp when you book, not months out on a brochure.

Solo and family pricing: every rate above is per person sharing (two to a room). Travelling alone, expect a single supplement, and in the Jul-Oct crunch it can run 30 to 50 percent on the pricier camps, since a room costs a camp the same whether one or two sleep in it. Travelling with kids, ask: many camps do a reduced child rate or a triple-occupancy family room for under-12s, and some cap age limits on walking activities, so tell us the ages and we’ll flag which camps actually suit a family.

Any of these extended hotel selections can be adjusted to target specific river crossings.

Covered Package Features

What Your Quote Handles:

  • Private use of a customized 4×4 safari land cruiser with an open pop-up roof hatch and off-road suspension.
  • The daily tracking services of an authorized, professional driver-guide who knows the ground.
  • Every daily park entry permit and wildlife fee cleared through the official Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) portal.
  • Government concession vouchers for every night spent inside the park boundaries.
  • Daily meals, packed field lunch boxes, and cold bottled water in the vehicle fridge.
  • A one-way regional flight from the Seronera airstrip back to Arusha on a domestic carrier, with all operator handling fees absorbed into your package total.

What Is Left Out:

  • International airfare to Kilimanjaro airport.
  • Your tourist visa. It’s $100 on a US passport, and bring the cash in crisp, unmarked notes dated Series 2009 or newer, because worn or older bills get waved away at the border and the gates.
  • Discretionary tips for your guide and camp teams (set aside about $20 a day from your group for the driver).
  • Camera-gear insurance. The dust and the corrugations will find your kit, so get it.

Mud, Dust, and the Gate Clock

A spotted cheetah rests on a rocky kopje looking over the savanna plains.
A majestic cheetah watches the plains from a rocky kopje in the Serengeti.

The black-cotton clay is the thing to understand before you pay a deposit. Bone-dry, it looks like solid ground. Twenty minutes of afternoon rain and it’s a grease trap. I think about a self-drive pair near the Nyabogati stream last season who pulled off the track for a leopard photo; their tyres packed solid and the chassis sat down on its axles, and because there’s no radio signal at the bottom of that valley, they were stuck five hours before a recovery truck found them. That is the whole case against saving money on a self-drive, in one afternoon. The tracks are graded and mapped for a reason, and a guide who has read this ground for years knows which innocent-looking flat will swallow a vehicle.

The dust is its own problem. It’s volcanic ash off the Ngorongoro highlands, so fine it goes through a standard zipper into your camera bag, which is why I tell people to bring Ziploc bags for the gear, not just a padded case, and never to change a lens with the pop-top open.

And a gate tip that has nothing to do with any of that. At Naabi Hill your guide is gone 30 to 45 minutes clearing permits. Two things. One, leave a window cracked and the flies find you inside a minute, thick and persistent, so it’s the vehicle sealed up or you outside, no in-between. Two, don’t just melt in the seat. Climb the little kopje by the gate. The dust up there has a dry, mineral, almost chalky smell you stop noticing by day three, the view runs to the horizon, and the rocks crawl with red-and-blue agamas the guides call Spider-Man lizards.

One more thing that catches people out: park permits run on a strict rolling 24-hour clock set by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT). Clear the scanners at Naabi Hill at 8:00 AM and you have to be back out, or through an airfield gate, by 8:00 AM on your final day, or the system bills you for a whole extra day. Every rate on this page already accounts for the current TANAPA conservation fees, the Ngorongoro charges, and the 18 percent VAT for the 2026/2027 season, so there’s no surprise levy waiting at a gate.

Common Savannah Booking Questions

How are luggage weight limits managed on the internal runway flights?

Strict is putting it mildly. It’s a hard 15 kg (33 lb) cap, full stop. Bring a rigid, hard-shell case with wheels and it will not fit the Cessna cargo pod, and the ground crew will leave it on the tarmac in Arusha. No exceptions. Soft duffels only, the kind that squash down.

Can you use a medical CPAP machine at the camps?

Yes, but you have to tell us upfront. Most remote camps run on solar and cut tent power around 10:00 PM to save it, so flag a CPAP or any medical device when you book and the crew rigs an independent marine battery inside your tent before you arrive. Unrelated but worth knowing while we’re on power: if a cloudy stretch flattens the camp solar and your camera battery dies, the cruiser’s 12-volt socket charges off the engine on the next drive, so keep a car-socket adapter in your day bag as backup.

What is the custom for tipping the tracking crew?

You tip your driver-guide roughly USD 20 to 30 a day from the whole vehicle on the final morning. For the lodge team, don’t tip individuals; drop about USD 15 a night into the communal staff box on the reception desk at checkout, which is split among the kitchen and laundry crews you never see.

What happens to our flights if a heavy morning mist rolls in?

The small regional planes fly on visual rules, so thick morning mist or low cloud can push a takeoff back by an hour. To keep that from touching your international connection, we schedule your fly-back leg early, leaving a comfortable six-hour buffer in Arusha before your onward flight leaves Kilimanjaro.

Finalize Your Travel Plans

Booking well takes accurate seasonal timing, proper dual-zone gate clearance, and a field team that knows the real rules of the bush, none of which a generic retail engine understands. Get the month, the sector, and the vehicle right and the rest follows.

You can coordinate your kit list and lock in a licensed private cruiser directly with the Arusha team through the reservation page, so your whole schedule is set well before the tracking season fills up.
