Ruben M.
Operations Manager and Veteran Wildlife Guide, BookSerengeti.com
Ruben M. works alongside Moses on the operations side of BookSerengeti.com and spends as much of the year as he can in the field, mostly up north during the crossing season. While Moses will talk a traveller through the whole circuit, Ruben is often the one out at Kogatende in August, watching the herds build on the Mara bank and reading which morning they might finally cross.
Guiding taught him patience before anything else. A river crossing keeps no timetable. A herd can gather at the water for five hours, back off, gather again, and then commit in ninety seconds, or not at all. Learning to read that, the difference between a herd that is committing and one that is only testing the water, took Ruben years, and it is the kind of judgement he passes on to guests so they understand what they are watching rather than simply waiting for something to happen.
What Ruben Does
On the operations side, Ruben looks after guide scheduling and the northern-sector logistics: which camps sit where through the crossing months, how the fly-ins line up with the airstrips at Kogatende and Lamai, and the day-to-day coordination that keeps a moving safari on track.
In the field, his interests run a little off the main road. He is a committed birder, and with well over 500 species in the Serengeti, he likes showing guests that a safari holds far more than big cats. He is also drawn to the slower rhythm of a photographic trip, the kind where you stay with one sighting and wait for the light instead of racing to tick off a list.
How Ruben Thinks About a Trip
Ruben’s advice to first-timers is that the Serengeti rewards patience more than luck. The guests who leave happiest are the ones who settle into the quiet stretches, ask questions, and let a sighting develop, because the best moments out here rarely arrive on cue.
His part is the field and the northern logistics, making sure the trips these guides describe actually run the way they should. The guides themselves are written by Moses C., our veteran guide, and reviewed by Emmanuel Soyala, who owns our MNRT-licensed operation.
